Kitchen make-over

This was our kitchen. In this picture you see one of the final photos of my Nemesis - the fridge. That fridge leaked all the time! It would either be too warm and everything would spoil or too cold and everything will freeze! We were defrosting the fridge once a month! This simply would not do! Finally after yet another day of having my dinner plans ruined due to frozen produce, I declared that "I hate the fridge and I want a new one now!" Bob was more than happy to oblige. This meant that he could go into his favorite store - Best Buy - and more importantly use the credit card to buy something~We went to Best Buy for the no interest for 18 months deal.
....and no, Bob did not leave with any other new toys - not that he didn't try ;-)

Along with the fridge, we generally hate our kitchen. We'd love to knock down a wall, install new cabinets, tile, etc.....But, we need to work with in our means. That means, a paint job and some new adhesive tiles. We decided to get a black fridge so we needed to think of a way to incorporate black into the kitchen. Then my brother, Chris, sent Tripp some chalkboard paint and a vision was born!

The Cabinets are all painted with chalkboard paint. At first, we were only going to paint the bottom cabinet in chalkboard. Then we saw how nice the contrast of the black and white looked so we decided to paint all of the cabinets. Now we have a space where our Grocery & Honey-Do Lists are in clear sight.

Tripp helped with the painting

To do the job right, we'd have to rip up the multiple layers of floor and level the sub flooring (possibly even replace it). We know that is the correct way to do the job...but, we decided to postpone the big job until we are ready to completely re-do the kitchen. Until then a superficial face lift will do. So we decided to use the peel & stick floor tiles. They worked out great in the bathroom and we are confident they will be great in the kitchen too. Most importantly they fit within our budget!
First we had to clean up and fill in all holes and cracks in the old floor.

Tripp is always a big helper. During this project he helped carry tiles to Bob, throw out scraps and jump up & down on the adhesive tiles after they were set in place.

Tripp helps lay down the first tile.

The new fridge arrives!

We got a 25 cube Ft Whirlpool Side by Side Fridge.
It has an ice maker and a built in Pur water filter.
Good thing we got the child locks! The moment he saw the new fridge, he immediately ran straight for the water and ice dispenser!

Little stinker!

Tripp loves the chalkboard cabinets!

Bathroom

Ahhhh..the pink bathroom. Pink; no more. We did a complete overhaul! New sub floor, floor, paint, sink, toilet, towel racks, mirror,........

One afternoon, Bob went into the bathroom and moments later yelled for me. He heard a cracking sound (like rotting wood) and felt like he sank a little...so I went into the basement to investigate......

What I saw verified Bob's fears...the toilet had a slow leak and was starting to compromise the integrity of the wood / floor! This simply would not do! We had Tripp's 1 year birthday coming up in a matter of weeks and tons of guests scheduled to join in the fun - we could not risk a toilet falling trough the floor incident!

Time to get to work!
1) remove the old toilet - check!

2) expose cool old wallpaper - hidden behind the toilet tank

3) figure out exactly how many layers of floor exist

5) remove floor coverings

6) Remove rotted sub-floor

7) cutting new boards to "marry" to existing supports and create more bracing....

8) Sub-floor pieces

Yup, it'll hold
